|Pasadena Black Pages Gains Steam As
Voice of the Community
|A Future Beyond "Mainstream" Media
|The media scene is quickly changing in Pasadena, and the people are starting to see and even experience
the difference. Since the emergence of the Internet, the ability for any individual to reach an audience of
millions has been made very possible, however major media outlets has always been able to use their vast
resources and influence to overshadow virtually and independent news coverage.....That is, until recently.
In the past 5 years, the growing population engaged through social media has created a much higher
demand for information and news coverage catering to what some would consider a "free thinking"
audience. The number of companies like News One and BuzzFeed are growing rapidly and in some way
trying to harness the power of going "viral". Well, here in Pasadena, it's no different.
With a huge decline in interest in the Pasadena Star News and the general shortage of fair reporting in our
community, the throne over Pasadena's media scene is wide open, and Pasadena Black Pages is coming
for it. Created by Pasadena High School Alum, Dennis Haywood, PBP is an online news publication that is
geared towards the African-American population in and around the Pasadena/Altadena area.
Interestingly, though the PBP is clearly labeled as a "Black" news source with virtually all content pertaining
to African-Americans, its value as a reputable source of information for anyone interested in the city of
Pasadena, cannot go unnoticed. Their coverage of local events, people, businesses, and political issues
give a rich insight to what's happening in our community from an important perspective that gets overlooked
far too often.

Today, African-Americans only make up about 10%
of Pasadena's total population, and that is a story in
itself that should be heard by entire the world! So,
there is really no wonder why the Pasadena Black
Pages has become so accepted so quickly or why
their stories mean so much to so many. What's for
certain, is that it is always in our community's best
interest to support independent media and
encourage independent voices to be spoken and
